Big magic in the mundane
The big picture in a small frame
Everything is sacred when you take time to notice
Big love happens in the small moments
Big love happens in the small moments
Finding big magic in small moments
This song by JJ Heller played through my headphones as I walked around the block smelling the spring air and appreciating the blue skies. Funny how a simple daily walk has become magical when I know that my friends and family in Lima are living with a mandatory curfew and strict stay-at-home orders.
Brayan, one of the residents of our apartment building, filmed this video from the window of our building. Watch it and you’ll see neighbors leaning out their windows cheering as someone gets arrested for taking their trash out.
They appreciate the enforcement of the new rules and seemingly extreme tactics. Nobody complains: They know that if the coronavirus sweeps their country as it’s sweeping the U.S. right now, that it will be bad. Really bad.
The song was the soundtrack of my heart in that moment — Everything is sacred when you take time to notice
I rounded the corner of our block and saw a family of four outside putting together a new basketball goal. Working together to do something simple. Based on how much I usually see their SUV pulling in and out of the neighborhood, I don’t think they’d be doing that if it were a “normal” Saturday. I’m guessing they are a lot like me and my family — grocery shopping to do, kids’ activities to run off to, and work to catch up on.
I found myself feeling happy for the family, hoping they were finding some big magic in that small moment. If they are like my family, we are realizing how much we have needed this kind of time to connect. We have been too busy with our own schedules and honestly, our own agendas. Simple time together–along with perspective from our family in Peru–is healing us more than we thought we needed.
The song kept playing –”You can’t do it all, so just do what you can”
I got back from my walk and sat down at my computer to see so many donations! Wow.
Your donations will ensure that 100 bellies remain full. And let me tell you what they see on those plates: big love. The biggest.
This kind of generosity is one of our best defenses against the virus of isolation and fear that we are fighting together, alone.
Please keep spreading the word about what’s happening in Lima. We desperately need more help. There is more big love waiting for all of us in the small moments.
